Toyota seems to manufacturing all sorts of new and innovative ideas for the disabled to get around on wheelchairs (however some of them, it can be argued, are less productive ideas than others. Toyota has managed to create a wheelchair that can translate your thoughts into motion, which is wonderful news for those who are severely handicapped; and they have created the most expensive (and tacky) motorized wheelchair on the market today.

They have also pioneered a chair with only three wheels instead of four, however the chair, currently named the “i-Real” (I wonder if Steve Jobs will be upset when he finds out), is not safe for the average disabled person. Originally boasted by Time magazine as one of the coolest inventions of 2005, until now the chair has not been sold because it does not pass any safety regulations. The wheelchair is only authorized to be used in the same manner as a golf cart on private property.

An airport in Japan uses this model for its elderly security personnel. The wheelchair can move at a top speed of 15 kilometres per hour. Some of those used at Chubu Airport also carry emergency medical supplies and even computers so that airport staff will be capable of checking flight schedules while they are out on patrol.
